Our Covenant God

Relevant Ministry Blog Schedule:

Thursday - "About Relevant Women"

Something I treasure about Scripture is when a well-worn verse has fresh life breathed into it and is as though the verse is brand new. That happened to me today with Genesis 9:9-10. God is speaking to Noah, promising never to flood the earth again, God begins by saying, “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you – the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you – every living creature on earth.” After this introduction God actually says He will never again flood the entire earth, but it is the introduction that got my attention today. Why would God make a covenant to animals? I get why He promised Noah and us, but why did He include the animals?

As I pondered this, it seemed as though God gave me a clearer understanding of that particular verse.  A covenant does not demand a two-sided promise; it can be one sided. Sometimes, God’s covenants are one-sided. God’s promises depend not on the promise receiver; but, on the promise maker. His perfect promises hinge on nothing but His holy self. His promises are not contingent upon our actions, acceptance, or even knowledge of them.  They, like Him, just are. God is The Great I Am, so therefore His promises just are.

God has purposes and plans that He is going to accomplish, and they can never be thwarted, no matter what. Some call these Kingdom purposes. They are large, universe-encompassing purposes. He has been gracious enough to give us roughly detailed descriptions of those plans. They are weaved throughout the old and new testaments of the Bible. The precious nugget is that God does not need us to accomplish His goals, but He does allow us the opportunity, honor and humbling privilege to be involved. He does not NEED us, He WANTS us. It is called ministry. God has and continues to be extremely interested in relationship. He desires to commune with us. He already knows us, He wants us to discover and know Him.

Relationship is always a two-way street. God has revealed Himself through Scripture, nature, and life. This is where we get involved. We first acknowledge, and then accept Him. After that, we begin our intimate relationship with Him. It is quite the journey! This is where, if we choose, if we are bold enough, we can get involved in that large, universe-encompassing plan God has already laid out and promised to fulfill. Does this contradict, not at all. God’s going to accomplish His purposes, He just gives us the option to choose to be involved. He calls us to be involved, He asks us, He demands, and beckons, but in the end, the acceptance part of involvement, and obedience, rests entirely on us. God has purposed that we all be involved, but sadly, only few will realize His intricate plan for their lives. With obedience comes the full measure of blessing and joy God has set aside for us. He longs to pour His love and blessing over us drenching us in His matchless grace and mercy. To receive this, obedience is required.

Our obedience to Him is pleasing. The word says that the way to please God is through faith. Faith is never idle. It believes God and then ACTS on it. God created us to be doers of His word. Not only do we take the word in, we must put the word out… we must do it. Our obedient actions are the fruit of our faith. And this fruit in our lives is so pleasing to God. Our faithful, fruitful actions rise to Him as a sweet aroma, as it lifts to Him, He is praised. He inhabits our praise and meets us there and it is the secret place where we worship and are at unspeakable peace with The Most High God. It is holy and beautiful. It is what we, mankind, were created for. Once we find this sacred place, this awesome bliss overtakes us and we simply must not keep it to ourselves! From this pleasing aroma, God pours forth our blessing and offers us the keys to our destiny. He has a plan for each of us. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”

Yes, our covenant God has a plan, a grand, universe-encompassing plan that He is accomplishing, but he has scripted us into it and allowed us to be His very hands and feet to carry it out as the most exquisite experience this side of eternity. He has a destiny outlined for YOU, yes you.  All you have to do is say. “yes, not my will, Lord, but yours.”

Will you say yes to God?

What is He asking you to do?

How will you walk that out?
