Introducing Relevant Women

by Pam Roth
Relevant Women will begin blogging every Thursday on the Relevant Ministry Blog. The blog articles on Thursday will be written specifically for women.  Several women from the Relevant Women team will write these blog articles on topics of interestWe invite you to take part by commenting and joining in on the conversation at the bottom of the article.  Help us get the word out by sharing the articles with other women in your life and encourage them to subscribe to the Relevant Ministry Blog.

It’s been almost a year ago that the Lord began to speak to me about developing a safe place for women to be able to tell their story.  During that time, I felt impressed that I was to invite five women to join me.  Over the course of a few weeks, I was able to connect with all five women and three of the five believed that God was calling them to be a part of what is now called – Relevant Women.

Over the course of one year, we have studied the Word together, encouraged each other and have grown in a deeper relationship with God and each other.  Now, we are waiting for all that God has in store for us.  We believe that the Lord will allow us to reach out to other women through spiritual development, mentoring, and retreats.

Just recently, four more women have begun the journey of becoming "relevant women." Through a process of growing in relationship with God and each other these four women along with the original three will reach out to women in their churches, through ministries, and through their daily lives.

We invite you to join us on our journey as we begin a weekly blog on Thursdays just for women.  We also appreciate your prayers for us as we look forward to all that the Lord has intended for us.

Living On Purpose

by Brad Houchin
Monday's Devotional from ONE 2013

Have you ever wondered how old were Peter, James John and the rest of the 12 who Jesus called to follow him? Some biblical scholars believe that most of the 12 disciples (other than Peter) were likely to be teenagers when they first met Jesus and began to follow him. That is you! Think about this for a moment:

You are at baseball practice, cheer practice, sitting in class, at you place of work… whatever it is you do on a daily basis, along comes this man named Jesus and he asks you to drop everything you are doing and to follow him. He is going to use you to impact the world!

What would Jesus find you doing if he were to come walking through your town?

How do you think you would respond to Jesus asking you to drop everything and follow him?

Teaching recap from ONE 2013

by Nelson Roth
Here is a teaching recap from the five speakers and teachers during the week of the first annual ONE that wrapped up on Saturday, June 15, 2013. (ONE is a weeklong mission experience for high school students along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, hosted by Relevant Ministry.)

1. Erik Johnson - on disciplemaking

  • Thanks to Jesus’ instructions when He commissioned the disciples we don’t have to come up with a mission statement - it’s to make disciples, who make disciples.
  • We are part of the movement He started 2,000 years ago.  Jesus was the first disciplemaker.
  • Disciplemaking is about relationships, it’s following Jesus together all day and everyday.
  • You have not truly made disciples until your disciple has made a disciple.
  • What would it look like for you to live a discilpemaking way of life.....like Jesus?
(You can leave a comment using the link at the bottom of this blog.)

2. Brad Houchin - on being responsive
  • What if your everyday life experiences became a mission trip?
  • Living life on mission... is engaging into “great commission opportunities” responding to the needs and the messiness of others.
  • When you get out and serve others you are doing what you were created to do.
  • Love your neighbors and be a first responder.
  • Look for Jesus in the world to see where He’s at. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to have an encounter with Him as you reach out to respond to the needs of this world.
  • Where is your go?
(You can leave a comment using the link at the bottom of this blog.

3. Jeff Hegstrom - on revealing Christ
  • Jesus spent time with people. He loved and cared deeply for others. And through His life, God was revealed.
  • Jesus was a reflection of the glory of God and people were drawn to His glory and He has given us His glory to be a reflection of Jesus Christ... Christ REVEALED in you and me.
  • God moves in us and works through us - to reveal Christ to others.
  • Our mission is to reveal Christ.
  • So by your life, are you giving others a reason to ask about the hope that's in you?
(You can leave a comment using the link at the bottom of this blog.

4. Pam Roth - on learning to tell your God story
  • Everyone has a story and your story has a purpose - what is your God story?
  • Are you prepared to give a reason for the hope that is within you? (I Peter 3:15)
  • Your story has the power to reveal Christ to others.
  • Who needs to hear your story?  How will God use you to impact others for Him?
  • Kindness and respect are two important factors in reaching others for Christ.  How important are these two characteristics to you when it comes to reaching others?
  • How much are you able to relate to others so they feel valued?
(You can leave a comment using the link at the bottom of this blog.

5. Nelson Roth - on ministry that’s relevant is relational
  • Jesus said that the greatest commandment wasn’t a rule but a relationship that happens because of love!
  • We say we love this and we love that - what does it really mean to love?
  • There are three Greek words for love - agepeo, phileo, eros, and we are only capable of agepeo love because God pours it into our hearts.
  • Our love is the measurement of what it means to be a follower of Christ.
  • In the end times, people will be lovers of self and lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God - what challenges do you face?
  • What adjustment could you make, for this week at ONE to be your best week ever?
(You can leave a comment using the link at the bottom of this blog.

Experiencing servacation

by Nelson Roth
During the month of January, friends from the north came for a stay on the Mississippi Coast.  Their plan was for more than being in better weather because they purposed to join in by serving along with Relevant Ministry.  The term we’ve been using for these special stays on the Coast is servacation!  It’s a combination of two good things, serving where there are needs to make a difference and a vacation.  Here’s how our friends, Bruce and Donnas Hertenstein, describe their month long servacation experience.

Being on a servacation is a completely new experience for us; but one that will be a wonderful memory. We came away not only having fun; but learning and feeling like we had served a purpose. Plus, we met many new friends that we'll always remember.

Bruce's goal was to help Relevant Ministry serve people along the Coast. He did that by helping put up doors and locks in a new church building in Bay St. Louis. The following Sunday, we visited that church at their official opening. Everyone was so thankful for all the help they had received, and Bruce was so glad he had been able to help.

For myself, I enjoyed getting to know some wonderful college students from ISU. They accepted me as a part of their group, as we helped as reading tutors in a local elementary school for a week. I loved getting to interact with the kids, and reading stories. At one point, we had a lively discussion on bullying.

Relevant Ministry turned our vacation into a rewarding and meaningful trip. I also want to mention that the RM team is such a loving and caring group; working hard to serve the coastal region of Mississippi. We definitely will do it again!

Thank you to Bruce and Donnas, for the investment they made at RM and into the community.
