Your story reveals the glory of God

by Jeff Hegstrom
One of the things I really enjoy about serving with Relevant Ministry is working with our interns.  As part of our leadership training, we spend 40 weeks with our interns going through a leadership curriculum to equip them to be the leaders God has called them to be and prepare them for life and future ministry opportunities God may lead them into.

Although I enjoy teaching all of the sessions, I particularly enjoy leading our session on learning to tell your God Story.  Together, we spend a week writing and mapping out the key events in our lives and discovering the life lessons in them.  Then we look at how God has used every event and circumstance to shape and mold us into the people we are today.

Whether our life events were joyful or painful, good or bad, God never wastes anything in our lives when we surrender it to Him.  The following week, we as leaders and interns share our God stories.  It’s a powerful time in which we laugh, weep and celebrate together what God has done in our lives.  For me, this is one of the most significant sessions in our training.  For many, they see for the first time how God has been there all along, through every circumstance … drawing us to Himself.  God’s love is so vast, so deep, that He never stops loving us and pursuing us with His everlasting love.  When you finally recognize God’s hand in your life story, It changes everything and you can’t wait for God to give you the opportunity to share your story with others!

There are two things I have discovered while teaching this session; firstly, people like stories.  Who doesn’t like to sit down and listen to a good story?  Jesus understood and modeled this in His ministry.  As people gathered around Jesus, He often used stories or parables to teach about what the Kingdom of God was like.  Stories help us relate to one another and what is going on in our lives around us.  Secondly, I have discovered that everyone has a story.  How many times have we been talking to someone and they share a personal example from their own life about what you were just talking about?

Just like the interns discovered, God has given every believer their own personal God story.  It’s a story of His amazing, redeeming love and how He has been there all along through every circumstance and event you have experienced in your life to draw you to Himself.  Now, He wants you to share it with others He has placed in your life.  Whether it’s through the relationships you have built or in those times that you respond to others in need, your unique God story is a story that God wants to use in you to reveal Himself and offer hope to the world!

Romans 10:13-15, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?  And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

What’s your story?  Will you take some time to sit down and write out your story?  What have been key events in your life?  What did you learn from those specific experiences? How has God used those experiences in your life to form and shape you into the person you are today?  Go share the story God has given you and let God’s glory be revealed through you!
