God’s Word, foundation for life

by Nelson Roth
“And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.”
  I Thessalonians 2:13
The Bible is God’s written Word to us.  “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  II Timothy 3:16-17
  • In what ways do you currently practice the spiritual discipline of Bible reading and study?
The impact of the Word was foundational in the lives of the first century believers and was vital for spiritual health and growth.  The Word that they experienced was both the written Word of God, the Scriptures; and, the Word proclaimed that aligned with Scriptures.

“But the Word of God continued to increase and spread.” Acts 12:24
“In this way the Word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.” Acts 19:20
  • How has the spiritual discipline of Bible study impacted your life?
Such impact is possible because of these four realities of the Word of God.  It’s true – alive – absolute – and powerful…

God’s Word is true:

sanctify them by the truth, your word is truth.  John 17:17

God’s Word is alive:
“the word of the Lord endureth forever.”  John 17:25
“heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away.”  Matthew 23:35
“being born again not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.”   I Peter 1:23

The Word is absolute:
It is perfect, not mixed with anything. The Word is infallible, there is no error.  “As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless.”  Psalm 18:30

The Word is powerful:
“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”  Hebrews 4:12
  • How do each of these realities align with your current personal beliefs?
God’s Word is: true – alive – absolute – and powerful; and it teaches us that:

God desires to reveal himself to us.
Romans 1:19-20, “Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.  For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”

Though we are out of relationship with God and separated from Him by sin, He loves us.  Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

There is hope if we make the right response to God’s love demonstrated in His gift of Jesus Christ.  Romans 5:15, 18, “how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!” …  “just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of the act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men”

Romans 10:13, “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
